August 24: Colorado Rockies versus Arizona Diamondbacks
In this NL West match up, the Rockies come in with a seven-game losing streak and a 13-15 overall record. Arizona has lost five straight and are last in the division at 13-16. Ryan Castellani is scheduled to start on the mound for the Rockies and Merrill Kelly is set to pitch for the Diamondbacks. Arizona is the favorite at –160 to +140 with an over/under of 9 ½.
Offensively for the Rockies, Trevor Story leads in both home runs (8) and RBI (17). Charlie Blackmon is the leading hitter with a gaudy .405 batting average. Nolan Arenado has been a great second power source with 7 home runs and 16 RBI, while Ryan McMahon has added 6 home runs and 17 RBI. The Rockies as a team are hitting .260 with 35 home runs and 5.1 runs per game.
For the Diamondbacks, Kole Calhoun is the team leader in home runs with seven with Eduardo Escobar and Nick Ahmed a distance second, each with three home runs. David Peralta leads the team in RBI with 20 and Starling Marte leads the team in batting average at .320. As a group, the Diamondbacks have hit only 22 home runs and average 4.3 runs per game.
On the mound, Ryan Castellani is making his four start of the season. He is 0-1 with a 3.77 ERA. The bullpen for the Rockies has been solid. Jairo Diaz leads the team in saves with there and has a 2.70 ERA. Most frequently used relievers Yency Almonte (3.29 ERA), Daniel Bard (4.50 ERA) and Carlos Estevez (2.63 ERA) have been reliable. As a team the Rockies have an ERA of 4.66 and defensively the club has 17 errors for a .984 fielding percentage.
Merrill Kelly has pitched very well this year, despite only a 3-2 record, his ERA is 2.59. The bullpen has been shaky, at best. Stefan Crichton has been the most reliable and most used, posting a 1.42 ERA. Closer Archie Bailey has six saves with a mediocre 4.50 ERA. Hector Rondon has been hit around to an ERA of 11.57. As a team the Diamondbacks have an ERA of 5.28. On a positive, they have been excellent defensively, having committed only 10 errors for a .990 fielding percentage.
One of these teams has to break their losing streak. Kelly should get the best of the Rockies lineup while the Colorado bullpen will have better success later in the game against the Diamondbacks.
This sets up for a close game. Arizona should get an early lead and have just enough to hold on late by a run or two. Go with the Diamondbacks in a lower scoring game, going the “under”.
