Detroit Tigers versus Los Angeles Angels (July 29)
The AL West’s third-place team Los Angeles Angels host the Detroit Tigers, who have the worst record in the league.
Jordan Zimmerman is scheduled to start on the mound for the Tigers and Jaime Barria is set to pitch for the Angels.
Offensively, the Tigers have struggled to score. They are hitting only .231 with 92 home runs and 3.5 runs scored per game.
Nicholas Castellanos is the team’s top hitter with a .276 average, 11 home runs and 37 RBI.
Brandon Dixon paces the club with 13 home runs and Jacoby Jones had added 10 long balls. Veteran Miguel Cabrera has only five home runs and a .275 average.
The Angels have been quite more productive at the plate. They are averaging 5.2 runs per game with 155 home runs. Tommy LaStella leads the team with a .300 average.
Mike Trout leads the team in both home runs (34) and RBI (85). Kole Calhoun has added 25 home runs to contribute to a potent power duo.
Add in 31 home runs combined from Albert Pujols and Shohei Ohtani and the Angels pose plenty of problems for opposing pitchers.
Jordan Zimmerman could have his issues keeping the Angels’ offense in check. He’s 0-8 with a 7.57 ERA. He’s given up 84 hits and nine home runs in just 60 2/3 innings.
Closer Shane Greene has done an excellent job with 22 saves and ERA below two.
Other frequently used relievers, Victor Alcantara and Joe Jimenez have a combined ERA of 5.19 over 78 innings. As a team, the Tigers have allowed 5.6 runs per game.
Jaime Barria has also struggled, pitching to an ERA of 6.63 in 38 1/3 innings, allowing seven home runs.
Closer Hansel Robles has converted 16 saves with an ERA under three.
The other most commonly used members of the bullpen have been relatively consistent.
Ty Buttrey, Justin Anderson and Noe Ramirez have a combined ERA of 3.38 in 136 innings.
The Angels have given up around five runs per game.
Both teams should be able to score due to the ineptitude of both starters so far this season.
However, the Angels have a considerably more powerful offense.
I think this will be a high scoring game overall with the Angels coming out on top by an 8-5 margin.
